The Legendary Tongariro Crossing

This is a 20 km tourist hike over the saddle of a volcano. It's been designed as a one way hike so as to bilk the tourists for bus rides from one end to the other. It's big business. The first 8kms of the hike are spectacular. The 12 kms after the Emerald Lakes are an annoying waste of time. My advice... do the first 8 kms and then go back.
